Marsh Madness

CHARACTER DESIGN
TWEENING
COMPOSITING

The aim of this project was to explore and experiment character design and animation for a reward style game. I took inspiration from video games like Rayman Legends, Little Big Planet and older 2000s cartoons.

Game Concepts

For This Project, I wanted to explore a variety of themes and art styles I could draw from. To do this I ideated and broke down the brief to make the concept as clear as possible before the asset creation phase.

Icon Illustration

With my concept art created, I cleaned up and finalised the icons that would be used in the final mock up video. I had drawn these characters on different layers and used bright colours to distinguish them from the swamp background that would be added in the final video.

I used shape language as a core part of displaying each character’s personality and how the four would work together in their swamp filled world.

Background and UI

With the main bulk of the project complete before animation, I put together a colourful swamp background and explored the potential UI that would tie the concept together.

I had used a mix of cel shading and spray paint brushes to get a unique texture in the background.

Animation + Compositing

Animated Icons

A core part of this project was producing animated icons that would entice users to keep playing the game and bring it to life.

To do this, I brought my seperated layers into After Effects and created animated loops. I used both frame by frame and tweening techniques to bring these characters to life and show their different personalities.

On top of animating the assets, I added compositing elements on top of their base layers to bring dynamic lighting to them to further match my concept art and background artwork.

With the icons completed, I put all of the necessary assets into my main project file and created a mock up animated video of how the game would look in practice.
