MOTION DESIGN CHARACTER DESIGN FRAME BY FRAME ANIMATION This motion piece is a frame by frame mixed media approach to the idea of reaching and healing someone’s inner child. Taking inspiration from The amazing world of gumball and other projects like it, I wanted to hone in on 2000s nostalgia and summer themes to create a relatable short for people in their late teens and early 20s.

The Mood
For This Project, I had wanted to create a mixed media style animation. Using photography backgrounds and putting animated characters on top.
With this in mind, I researched a variety of designers and tv shows to draw from, these decisions also influenced my visual style and designs for the characters.
Character Designs
Before I even got started on my short’s narrative, I explored a variety of character designs, namely using shape language and silhouettes as a visual indicator for how the characters would behave.
With my research and case studies in mind, I used the approach of anthropomorphic dog designs to allow the story to be relatable regardless of where the someone is from.
I designed a variety of adult and child versions of each character and decided to go with the dogs with the long ears due to peer feedback.

Photography
With the chracters established, I explored my local area took photos that I could use as backgrounds for my characters to explore and have their little adventure.
I edited the photos to hyper extend their summer aesthetic to further associate it with growing up and how a young kid could see the world around them.
Rough Animation
Frame By Frame Experiments
As this was my first project using frame by frame animation, I created 4 different scenes of my two characters doing some kind of ‘sibling-like’ activity in a small variety of locations.
Final Animations
With the animations cleaned up, I combined the two in after effects and used some small effects make the characters fit in the real world.
